DESCRIPTION: MODERN ERA RETROSPECTIVE-ANALYSIS FOR RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS

MERRA is a NASA reanalysis for the satellite era using a major new version of the Goddard Earth Observing System Data Assimilation System Version 5 (GEOS-5). The Project focuses on historical analyses of the hydrological cycle on a broad range of weather and climate time scales and places the NASA EOS suite of observations in a climate context. STATUS: Our MERRA Holdings are continually updated.: MERRA spans 1979 through the present in near real time.

The Climate Analysis Section provides distilled derivatives of the hourly data files provided by direct ftp from NASA [http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/daac-bin/DataHoldings.pl].These have been subsetted as daily (/project/cas/MERRA/DAILY/), monthly (/project/cas/MERRA/MONTHLY), and monthly mean diurnal cycles (/project/cas/MERRA/MONTHLY/DIURNAL). The file naming convention is as follows: 1) all filenames begin with the variable name (available in the File Spec Document). Daily files are provided for each year and their suffix is configured as{var}.{ys}.nc. Daily files are also packed to reduce file size. Monthly files are named using the convention {var}.mon.mean.nc and span the entire duration and monthly diurnal cycles are named as {var}.{ys}.diurnal_cycle.nc. Monthly products are not packed.

The file specification for MERRA data products can be found here.

An overview of MERRA (from AMS 2009) can be found here.
