Correlation coefficients over 180 months of COADS sea surface
temperature and marine air temperature anomalies. Monthly anomalies
were computed relative to the mean annual cycle for 1979-1993.
Coefficients less than 30% are indicated by the dark shading, and
values greater than 60% are indicated by the light shading. The
contour increment is 15%, and regions of insufficient data are not
contoured. A nine-point smoother was applied to the results in this
and all subsequent figures.
