anomalies for (top) the surface temperature record and (bottom) the
MSU 2R record. Monthly anomalies were computed relative to the mean
annual cycle for 1979-1995. Values less than -20% are indicated
by the dark shading, and values greater than 20% are indicated by the
light shading. The contour increment is 10%, and regions of
insufficient data are not contoured in the top panel.
