Dennis Shea, Associate Scientist

Research

Dennis Shea is an Associate Scientist IV. He arrived at NCAR in April, 1972 and has worked on a range of research topics over the years. He has been a lead or co-author of ~30 refereed papers. The subjects of these papers range from hurricane climatology and structure, to long-range predictability, atmospheric angular momentum, the El Nino/Southern Oscillation, analyses of ocean data and, to the 11-year Sunspot Cycle effects on the atmosphere. He was a member of the Geophysical Statistics Project and was a member of the AMS' Probability and Statistics Committee. He is an expert on processing data in a variety of data formats. He has been the scientific advisor and a developer of the NCAR Command Language (NCL: http://www.ncl.ucar.edu ). As part of an out reach service to the climate community, the NCL team has presented over 50 workshops in five separate countries and at 10 universities and government laboratories in the United States.

Research Interests

  • Climate diagnostics; El Nino; Potential for Long Range Prediction; Solar-Climate Relationships; Statistical Applications.
  • Datasets: assessment and creation.
  • Developing community software for the processing of data related to model evaluation and climate research.
