07.03.01 - Restoring Files - /home

On linux systems, /home is backed up daily, but there are also snapshots taken every six hours.
In each user's directory is a hidden directory called ".snapshot". A directory listing will show the following:

Every six hours a snapshot is taken starting at midnight. If you were working on something in the morning and biffered it in the afternoon, you might be able to retrieve the file from the noon snapshot.

Likewise there is a snapshot taken every evening at midnight and one on Friday evening which is held for a week.

Users can often restore files themselves by searching within the .snapshot tree.
Once the file/directory is found, simply copy it back into your home directory.

If you need to go back further, then you will need to contact CGD/IS.
Remember that backups are only kept for 90 days.
