How to Perform a Manual Windows Update

NOTE: Your Windows update may look like any of the two scenario's below:

SCENARIO 1:

  • Close all your programs.
  • Under Start, go to Windows Update:

  • The Windows Update website should appear. If you receive a Security Warning dialog, click Yes to prceed.
  • Click 'Express Install (Recommended)'.

  • After it looks for updates it will list them and a button will be on the screen that says 'Install'.
    - Click this button to install the updates. It may ask you to accept agreements.
    - If it does, hit 'agree'. The updates will then install and when they are done you may be asked to reboot.

SCENARIO 2:

  • Close all your programs.
  • Under Start, go to Windows Update:

  • The Windows Update website should appear. If you receive a Security Warning dialog, click Yes to proceed.
  • Click on the link titled "Scan for Updates".Your computer will begin searching for available updates to download.

  • If any updates are found, you will see a "Review and install updates" link. Click it to continue.

  • You will be given a list of software that will be installed. You only need to install the Critical Updates and Service Packs. Click on the "Install Now" button to proceed with the download.

  • If you receive a license agreement dialog, click the radio button that says "I accept the agreement" and click next.
  • The update(s) will now be downloaded and installed. You can see the progress of this in the Windows Update – Web Page Dialog window.

  • When the downloading and installation is finished, you will be brought to a summary page of all the software you selected, with an Installation Complete notification. You may be required to restart your computer.
  • IMPORTANT: Repeat this process to make sure there are no more updates available for your computer. Often, Windows has to install one update separately before it can install the other updates, so you need to run Windows Update at least twice until it says you have [0] Critical Updates and Service Packs to install. Sometimes it may take three or more runs and reboots to install all the updates.
