Effective Wed 28 Oct 2009, data management on the CGD FTP server will be changed to better support the way it is used. Historically, the FTP server has been used to house a small number of files for archival purposes (ex. data referenced in journal articles), and to a large extent temporary data being made available to colleagues. This has led to the partition hovering near 100% usage for years, and the common e-mail pleading for users to clean up their unused files. To remedy this, the /ftp will be broken into two areas: /ftp/archive and /ftp/pub Permanent files will be housed in /ftp/archive while temporary files continue to be placed in /ftp/pub. For /ftp/archive: . CGD is not a massive archival site. This area is intended for small files referenced on somewhat frequent basis. Large data sets should live on the mass store. . For the initial migration only, current users will receive an e-mail with a list of files. Any files needing to be archived will be moved to /ftp/archive with a sym link pointing back to the original location. . In the future, users will need to contact the CGD/IS staff to place files in the FTP archive area. . Each file will also have an accompanying descriptor file with the following information: FILENAME: sample.nc DOI: INCEPT DATE: 2009/11/25 EXPIRATION DATE: 2014/11/25 OWNER: Adam Phillips EMAIL: asphilli@ucar.edu PHONE: 303-497-1726 REASON FOR ARCHIVAL STATUS: Model reference data. DATA DESCRIPTION: Fields of green. For /ftp/pub: . A scrubber with a 20 day lag time will be placed on /ftp/pub.
