EDUCATION
Princeton University, Princeton, NJ,
1994-2000
Ph.D. Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, January
2001
Thesis: Sources and sinks of atmospheric CO2
estimated from batch least-squares
inversions of CO2 concentration measurements.
(J. L. Sarmiento, Advisor)
Johns Hopkins University, Whiting School of Engineering, Columbia, MD, 1989-1993
M.S. Applied Physics, May 1993.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University, Blacksburg, VA, 1984-1989
B.S. Aerospace and Ocean Engineering (Summa Cum Laude)
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Visiting Scientist, Climate and Global Dynamics Division, NCAR, Boulder, CO,
2003-present
Designed and implemented a 4-D Var data assimilation scheme
to solve for sources and sinks of CO2
at the resolution of a global transport model (2° x
2.5°). Also constructed the adjoint to
the model.
Postdoctoral Fellow, Advanced Study Program, NCAR, Boulder, CO, 2000-2002
Researched the global carbon cycle, atmospheric tracer
transport, state-space estimation theory,
observational network design, and variational data
assimilation techniques.
Research Assistant, Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences Program, Princeton Univ.,
Princeton, NJ, 1994-2000
Researched the seasonal and inter-annual variability of the
global carbon cycle and the physical
processes controlling CO2 sources and sinks; in
the group of J. L. Sarmiento.
Aerospace Engineer and Cooperative Education Student, Attitude Analysis
Section, Flight Dynamics
Division, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD,
1985-94
Developed spacecraft attitude and orbit determination
algorithms and software specifications for
several NASA/Goddard satellite missions. Supported the launch of several such
missions. Also
managed contractor personnel to achieve these goals. Designed, developed, and tested a Kalman
filter for spinning spacecraft attitude determination. Learned state space estimation theory.
