The current land model diagnostics package is an extension of the original
LMWG diagnostics package developed by Keith Oleson, which
was in turn based extensively on the AMWG Diagnostics Package
created by Mark Stevens. The diagnostics package consists of a c-shell script that provides job control over plotting programs
written in the NCAR Command Language (NCL), Perl and the netcdf operators
(NCO).
Description

The land model diagnostics package can be used to compare two
model simulations or compare a model simulation to observational data.
The diagnostics package produces postscript plots of long-term trends and seasonal means, in both regional, global,
and globally averaged formats from CCSM-CLM2 and CCSM-CAM monthly netcdf history files. The postscript files are
converted to gif files and packaged in a web page for easy reference.
Included in the package are HTML files which provide the infrastructure for a basic website for the display of all plots. The c-shell script has a switch for creating webpages automatically. When this is used the end result of running the script is a tar file of all the plots in gif format and the needed html files organized in the proper subdirectories. The file is then untarred in the user-specified directory and the user can create a single link to the directory structure.
The land diagnostic package was extensively rewritten from earlier versions to facilitate the CLAMP model intercomparisons and to overcome storage space limitations on analysis of exceptionally long trend and climatology periods. The different versions produce bit for bit comparibility. However, the new structural logic prohibits backward code and input file compatibility with earlier versions.
Differences between v4 and earlier versions:
- v4 is 1 based (1=ON; 0=OFF). Earlier versions were 0=based (0=ON).
- v4 pre-processing is handled by one process (lnd_preProcDriver.pl).
- Program computes long-term climatology continuously without saving monthly history files. Each year is processed into annual files, and the monthly files are compiled in continuous monthly and seasonal files for the long-term climatology. The monthly history files are removed after they are processed to save space.
- Program will exit completely (and gracefully) if any stage of the pre-processing or analysis fails.
- New variable_master4.*.ncl contains information on derivation, model origin, and CLAMP.

- CLAMP runs are identified by a flag in the c-shell run script.

- A restart flag in the c-shell run script allows the user to restart the pre-processing (e.g., during the MSS
file retrieval) without losing information. E.g., script fails on year 89 of a 100y
MSS file retrieval. To restart without losing the 89 years already processed, set the restart flag to 0, and set the
startYr to 88 (setting the year to 88 instead of 89 ensures a complete processing in case year 89 failed mid-year.

- C13 values are reported in per mil only. Native units are not reported.
