Pictures showing the outline of classes and testing

Here we show some pictures taken during a brown-black betl class and also a colored belt test. These pictures serve to demonstrate the different parts of class.

We divide classes into the following components:

Warm-up and stretching

First we do joint rotates and then proceed to an aerobic warmup to increase the core temperature of the muscles, preparing them for stretching and exercise.

Aerobic Warm-up

Passing the medicine ball around...

(This is a great exersice as it's fun, builds strength and rotational flexibility of the trunk.)

Static Passive Stretching

Static passive stretching is what is traditionally termed "stretching" and are exersices with relaxed muscles that are pulled by other muscles to increase the range of motion with leverage. Static passive stretching helps to get muscles ready to use. It can also help increase the range of motion for a given joint and muscle group.

(Here is an example of a static-passive stretch for rotational flexibility of the back and hips)

(A static passive stretch primarily for the Glutes..)

Basics

Class doing a front sweep -- dynamic stretching

Dynamic stretching is moving joints through the full range of motion by raising the joint through the full range of motion.

(Dynamic Stretching is actually the most important type of stretching to increase height in kicking)

Target Kicking

Target kicking is important for getting pin-point accuracy in techniques and in learning power generation.

Bill Side kick to target

Mark Side kick to target

Forms

In forms we learn how to flow techniques together, how to increase aggression, power generation under more complex exersices, how to deal with multiple attackers, artistic expression of Tae Kwon Do, a wide base of self-defense techniques encompassing: sweeps, throws, grabs, traps, strikes, and counters to the same.

Sparring

In sparring we work with a partner in different drills to learn how to use various techniques in a real situation with a real person.

3-step Sparring

The first sparring drill we teach is a simple drill called 3-step sparring that helps students to establish distancing and control, before we move onto more free-flowing drills. 3-step sparring is still interesting at advanced levels, because it provides a forum for trying out a variety of advanced techniques in a safe setting. 3-step sparring includes blocking from 3 punches that are done stepping forward, and then a final retaliation technique. Everything is done with no-contact, so striking techniques are done full power, full speed and full extension, but are deliberiably targeted to just before the opponent.

Free-Sparring

Free-sparring is an open free-flowing drill where attacks and defense aren't preset. The sparring shown here is all no-contact, but advanced ranks also have some exposure to Olypmic style full contact sparring.
