Abstract This issue of US CLIVAR Variations examines wildfire prediction on weather-to-seasonal timescales, framing wildfire as a complex, multi-stage hazard—ignition, spread, containment, and secondary effects like smoke and debris flows—each with distinct predictability and uncertainty. Four articles anchor the collection: Iglesias frames wildfire as a multiscale Earth system challenge spanning pre-event to post-event stages; Coffield et al. call for better detection and nowcasting as fire regimes shift; Breeden and Worsnop assess subseasonal-to-seasonal fire danger prediction and the drivers shaping forecast skill; and Kramer and McClure address the research-operations interface, urging stakeholder co-production. Together they chart the community's progress while highlighting the challenges that remain in modeling predictability and making forecasts actionable for a more wildfire-ready society.
